Packing Up For The Winter

As the Starks tell us, Winter Is Coming

There is a definite chill in the air and the sky has that bright, crisp shade of blue which is the calling card of Winter. This is the signal for leaving the house with gloves and scarves, snuggling into a cosy jumper and putting the barbecue away for it’s winter hibernation. At the moment, my husband and I are playing the “We’ll give it another week” game we all play with the heating. We are British after all. Blue is our natural colour. Spare a thought for Boy. Being married to a knitter, he gets told to “put another jumper on” rather than being allowed to admit defeat and turn the heating on. If I’m not careful though, I’ll find him curled up in my stash. Maybe one bar wouldn’t hurt.

We’ve been tidying up the garden too. Pulling up old plants and vegetables that have done their jobs, adding them to the compost heap so they can continue to nourish us and turning the last of the harvest into jam, chutney and passata or simply adding them to the freezer to enjoy in the winter months.

I love this time of the year. It’s a proper chance to sit down and take stock. To gather the things you need around you and be thankful for them. This is a chance to reflect and think about how far I’ve come in the last year and what I want to achieve over the next. As the Earth slows down, so can we. Winter gives us the opportunity to internalise the things that have happened and make sense of them. It is sometimes harder to do this in the harem scarem months of Summer’s frenetic activity. It is a time to draw a sigh and think “OK, that’s all over with” before working on what’s next.

Make a big mug of tea, wrap a blanket around you and enjoy the infinite possibilities that lay ahead of you. Then you can plan how to make them happen.
