Sparking Saturday – Ndidi Ekubia

This morning I want to share some beautiful silverware with you from the very talented Ndidi Ekubia.

I love Ndidi’s work because she sees the world in a similar way to me –

My inspirations stem from the patterns of everyday life: from the cityscape of London through to organic natural forms

For someone who sees pattern everywhere, you can imagine how happy this made me. But I’m also in love with the way she talks about her “artistic landscape” –

In turn my artistic landscape has been determined by the bold African shapes, textiles, food and passionate family conversation of my childhood.

Ndidi uses the traditional methods of her silversmithing trade. Beating the silver over metal and wooden forms, she is able to manipulate the sheet silver into the desired shape. As with most creative processes, this is not just a case of doing a thing and creating an item. Ndidi works with the silver and feels changes within the metal as she works, allowing it to settle into a natural form. She works with the material which is the mark of an artist.

As you can see the work has a beautiful fluidity that only comes from working with the material. The use of silver just makes these pieces seem even more liquid. I can imagine them as drops of water, frozen in an instant to make these array of vases, dishes and candle holders. It’s the organic shaping that gives them such a tactile quality. These handmade items, beg to be touched and stroked.

I really like the way they look so different. These are pieces to talk about but without being in your face. They have a quiet elegance

.Ndidi sells her silverware through several outlets which I recommend you peruse. If you want to see more of her work and exhibitions then visit her site for more information.

Enjoy
