Would you like to see something bright and cheerful this morning? Then look no further!
Woah There Pickle is the linocut print creative outlet for Vicky Day, a Brighton based print maker. As you know, I find print damn near impossible so when I see prints as bright and vibrant as this, I am in awe and it makes me happy. Vicky’s approach to her work is one of fun and light-heartedness –
My subject matter is generally silly bits and bobs, inspired by places I’ve been, nostalgia and iconic objects or designs. The thing I love most about making prints is that you never know exactly what it’s going to look like until it’s printed…so if I peel back that paper and it makes me laugh I know I’ve done a good job!
I think Vicky has done lots of good jobs. Look –
I love the nostalgic images Vicky uses. You can almost smell the wax of the Crayola crayons and the pun on “Hello Treacle” just makes me smile broadly.
The work is bright and cheerful. It’s nostalgic without being twee. Vicky is right – you never quite know how a lino print will turn out but if the design is good and the idea is clear, then the print has a good chance of turning out well. Vicky’s strength lies in her clear ideas and sense of fun but it’s the design that really sets her prints apart. They may appear to be simple lines but the simplicity is deceptive. It takes a true talent to be able to create an image that is instantly recognisable and at the same time stir feelings of nostalgia. As I’ve said before, it’s the mark of a skilled artist to know when to stop. To understand that less is more. Vicky is such an artist.
Vicky sells her work though a variety of online retailers that can be found here. If you want to see more of Vicky’s work or just keep up to date with her news then visit her site.
